5. Analyze results

Choose Combined Analysis

From your FamilyTreeDNA profile, start an analysis and choose Combined Analysis. Review total shared cM and the available match-selection options.

Select the AI option

The base report costs 500 credits. Add AI for 250 additional credits if you want written cluster reports and an overview: 750 credits in total.

Find the patterns with AutoCluster

Colored clusters group matches who share DNA with one another. Explore the shared-match matrix, switch to a shared-cM heat map, or inspect a cluster and its members.
AutoCluster: shared-match groups in one interactive chart.
Compare the amount of DNA shared between pairs of matches.
Browse clusters, members and their linked evidence. AI summaries appear when the AI addition is selected.
AutoKinship: a possible relationship tree reconstructed from shared DNA.

Compare the same chromosome regions

AutoSegment combines overlapping DNA segments with shared-match information. The opposite-segment view highlights overlaps between matches who do not match one another, helping you investigate the two parental copies. Overlap alone does not establish a common ancestor.
AutoSegment: inspect overlapping segments and their match groups.
Opposite segments: investigate groups that may lie on different parental sides.

Connect the DNA patterns to family trees

AutoTree compares available trees to find ancestors shared by your matches and, where available, your own tree. Follow those connections alongside AutoKinship’s reconstructed relationship hypotheses.
AutoTree brings common ancestors and their associated matches together.
Open the ancestor connections behind a cluster for closer inspection.

See where the connections fall

Paint shared segments across your chromosomes, expand individual chromosomes and spotlight matches or ICW clusters. Add ancestor colors and a family-tree view to connect chromosome regions with your research.
A chromosome-wide view of the segments shared with your matches.
Color segments by ancestor and compare them with the family tree.
Inspect the matches and relationship evidence behind an individual segment.

View matches on the Y-DNA and mtDNA trees

Where haplogroup information is available, view matches on the Y-DNA and mtDNA trees alongside shared-cM and cluster information. These views add lineage context to your autosomal research.
Y-DNA: explore the direct paternal-line context.
mtDNA: explore the direct maternal-line context.

Add AI analysis to your report

Let the AI review the evidence produced by the combined methods and turn it into written summaries. The underlying charts, trees and chromosome views form the base Combined Analysis; the AI option adds a written interpretation.

Per-cluster analysis

Read a summary of a cluster’s matches, common ancestors, segments and predicted relationships, with suggested directions for further research.

An overview of the whole kit

Review the clusters with promising ancestral leads and the evidence behind those suggestions before deciding where to focus.

A per-cluster report explains the evidence and possible research leads.
The AI overview brings the findings together across the report.

Review the evidence behind each lead

AI summaries can contain errors. Treat proposed ancestors and relationships as hypotheses and confirm them with documentary research and genetic evidence. Read the validation guide.

Match names are replaced with neutral labels before the AI briefing is sent to the language model, then restored in the finished report.

The AI addition costs 250 credits on top of the 500-credit Combined Analysis. Combined Analysis is available to customers outside the free tier; the AI addition requires an active subscription.

Combined Analysis FAQ

The base Combined Analysis costs 500 credits. The optional AI addition costs another 250 credits, making 750 credits in total. Combined Analysis is available to customers outside the free tier; the AI addition requires an active subscription.

Combined Analysis runs on FamilyTreeDNA data. Available results depend on your DNA matches, linked family trees, segment data and haplogroup information.

Shared-match clustering, segment analysis and DNA-based relationship hypotheses can be useful without complete family trees. AutoTree’s common-ancestor findings depend on the trees available for your kit and matches.

They are hypotheses to investigate. Confirm proposed connections with documentary records and independent genetic evidence.

Yes. The 500-credit Combined Analysis provides the connected analysis views. Choose the AI addition when you also want per-cluster written reports and a whole-kit overview.

Combined Analysis is available to customers outside the free tier and follows the same match limits as the other members-area analyses: up to 200 analyzed matches without an active subscription and up to 400 with one. It is not available in the free tier, which allows up to 50 matches for the other analyses. These are match-count limits, separate from credit balances; settings and available data can result in fewer matches.
